At the center of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, dwelt a shepherd boy. His being was pure, simple yet virtuous. His primary duty was to care for his flock of rams.
Their gentle baas and the whispering of the breezes through the single tree on the hilltop were his main co-dwellers. Day after day, watching over his charges inculcated in him a feeling of quiet fulfillment.
However, there were occasional moments of isolation, when the shepherd boy would pine for companionship. In one such instance because of sheer tedium, the shepherd boy conceived a mischievous plan.
Narratives of wolves prowling on sheep had long been circulating in the village. So, the boy opted to used this fear and played a joke on the townsfolk.
One day he ran into the village shouting “Wolf! A check here wolf is attacking my sheep!” The frightened villagers rushed up the hills for rescue but discovered nothing threatening.
The boy chuckled at the puzzle on their faces. This prank continued for a couple of more days. Yet, one noon, a real wolf did come to prey the herd. The shepherd boy raced for aid shouting “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one came.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but managed to rescue only few of his sheep. Heartbroken, he returned to the town only to receive a lesson on honesty and the repercussions of crying wolf.
